What is a nogard?

For reading we are focusing on visualising. We had to listen to the description that Miss Dippie read us and draw the description.

What is a nogard?
The nogard is an animal. It has an oval-shaped body. It has a long neck and tail. The top of the neck, back and tail are covered with a row of triangular-shaped plates. The nogard’s head is shaped like a long triangle. It has big eyes and eyebrows that stick out. It also has big nostrils. Its body is covered with scales. The nogard has four short legs. At the end of each leg is a foot with five toes. Each toe has a sharp claw at the end. The nogard has two wings attached to its body. These are located behind the front legs towards the top of its back. Nogards are usually green but change to a deep purple during the winter months.

Mustard Plant Update 16.05.11

Today we checked our mustard plants.  The one on the window sill has grown. It is very green and leafy. It looks healthy.  The one over by our display has also grown. It is taller than the one on the window sill but leaves are smaller and not as green. The one in the art cupboard grew as well. It is the tallest, but the leaves are tiny and very yellow

The Mustard Seed Experiment

The soil

We are looking to see where the mustard seeds will grow the best.

We are going to water them each day, use the same soil, and see what happens.

One will be on the windowsill
One will be in the art cupboard
One will be under the lights in the clasroom.

Which one will grow the best?
The mustard seeds

Gabs thinks it will be the one with sunlight, and Tom S thinks the one in the cupboard will grow well because its dark and the plant will think its underground.

What do you think?
We will take photos each day to show you what is happening.

Potato Experiment!

We are going to do an experiment with two potatoes. They are both starting to sprout. One we put in the sun, on the windowsill and the other is in the art cupboard.

Prime Ministers Press Conference

On Friday, 6th of May 2011, a few lucky people were chosen to ask a question in a press conference to the Prime Minister John Key.  We had to stand up when he arrived.  Room 9 was set up like a press conference. The Prime Minister was at the front of the classroom ready to answer questions, with David Carter, MP.  We had to put up our hands and the Prime Minister chose you. My question was "What is the favourite part in the building that you work in?"  His answer was his office, because he has the best view in the Beehive. Some other questions were: "Do you have a pet?" He has a cat called Moonbeam Smokey Fluffy Key. His daughter called it Moonbeam, his son called it Smokey and his wife called it Fluffy. He wasn't allowed to call it anything. "What was your most difficult time as Prime Minister?" He said it was the Pike River disaster and the Canterbury Earthquakes. He was also asked if he played soccer. He said that he used to but he got injured and he showed us his scar on his ankle. After that we went into the hall for the opening. My favourite part was asking my question, even though I felt nervous and my heart was beating heaps.

Debating

Charlie sharing his opinion
Ollie and Imogen planning what to say

Gabby organising what her group wants to say
This term for writing we are learning to write persuasive writing. Today, Miss Dippie told us that she didn't think that it was a good idea for her to do cooking with the class. Room 9 split into two groups. One group thought we should be able to cook, and the other group thought it was too dangerous for Room 9 to cook.  We had a debate.  Gabby was the leader of the pro cooking group. Imogen was the leader against children cooking. Imogen and Ollie were worried that Room 9 could get hurt cooking or damage something. Gabby, Keke, Tom and Charlie said that they would make sure that they would get an adult to supervise and do the chopping and hot things. They also reminded Miss Dippie about how they were good listeners and very sensible, so they would always be following her instructions in the kitchen. Both sides shared their opinions and the pro cooking group managed to persuade Miss Dippie to agree that cooking with Room 9 was a good idea.
Watch this space for when we start writing our persuasive arguments.

Poem by Stella and Tara

Last term we were learning to write poetry. One day at reading time, Stella and Tara got together and wrote this poem about the earthquake and how they felt on the day.

Earthquake Poem

Eating lunch with our friends .

                  Rocks falling, ground shaking

                         People screaming everywhere!

                                  People running everywhere!

Parents picking up their children, going to their homes.

                                                          Big  hugs,  tears  running  everywhere

                                                                                         By Stella and Tara.
